The farm, "fattoria" of Pallerino is situated on the hilltops overlooking the storical valley of Elsa and its river. Through the centuries the river Elsa was of great importance to the cultural and economic development of the whole area forming the natural link between Siena and Florence. The ancient pilgrims path, the "Francigena" which runs just over the other side of the valley, with its constant flow of people travelling along it, played an important part in forming this particular piece of Tuscany. It has lately been restored and is great for walking a bit back in time and for admiring the beautiful landscape.
The little town of Castelfiorentino is the most important place of the valley. It is a lively place with a nice historical towncenter and plenty of things to look at like churches, a museum, a theatre and blissfully few tourists! It also has a great big market on saturdays. Trains run regulary from there to Florence and Siena, when you get fed up with italian driving! It is also quite near to famous places like Certaldo, San Gimignano and San Miniato, famous for good food and truffels.
